When I tell people about Mannatech's glyconutritional products, most people think that these nutrients as just another one of the multitude of 'vitamin or health products' that they have heard about or have seen advertised. Most people have become cynical about hearing of 'another one', and do not comprehend that glyconutrients are different from all other nutrients.
There is a great need to educate people about lifestyle, if they are to understand the choices they need to make to stay healthy. It is very difficult to see or believe beyond what we have learned. This new information will not be found in textbooks, newspapers, radio, or TV. I hope that this information will give you a better understanding of your choices. Good choices are really what results in a healthy lifestyle.
Until individuals understand their opportunities to take responsibility for their own health, they will be giving the control of their health to others. In order for us to take this responsibility, we will need to know why our health, individually, and as a nation, has been deteriorating in the last 20 to 30 years. Our national epidemic of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer has not occurred without reasons.
The term "Healthy Lifestyle" encompasses 'Environmental', 'Spiritual', 'Activity' (exercise), and 'Nutritional' factors.
Nutritional factors include essential proteins, essential fats, essential sugars (glyconutrients), vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Adequate water is essential for good health.
Eating low glycemic foods is basic for enjoying a healthy lifestyle.
Eating high glycemic foods cause our blood sugar to raise. This elevation causes increased insulin production in order to protect our (16 trillion) cells from elevated blood sugar levels, which are toxic to these cells.
Chronically high insulin levels, also called by the name of 'Syndrome X', or 'Metabolic Syndrome', have long been recognized as a precursor to most of all chronic diseases. A great deal of research has been devoted to finding treatment of these syndromes.
The truth is obvious, but not believed because it is so simple. We are looking into the face of truth and not recognizing it!
The cause of high insulin levels, comes from eating too much of the kind of food that elevates our blood sugar. Because high sugar levels in our blood are toxic to our cells, the body produces insulin to store this excess sugar and get it out of the blood.
Some people have chronically high insulin levels because they have chronically high intake of high glycemic food.
Insulin levels should normally be between 4 to 6. Above 8 can indicate a potential problem. Levels between 10 and 13 indicate insulin resistance.
Recently one of my patients had a fasting insulin level of 26. Her blood sugar levels were within a normal range, because her body was able to produce large amounts of insulin to control her blood sugar level. The best single screening test for predicting health is a fasting blood insulin level. A normal blood sugar test will tell us nothing about high insulin levels and the potential dangers we face with insulin resistance.
High insulin levels are toxic to the cell receptors, which are glycoproteins or glycolipids. High insulin seems to 'caramelize' these fine (essential sugar) filaments, which are the cell receptors, and the cells become insulin resistant, (cannot pick up cellular signals). Resistant cells may need 10 times as much insulin (for one hormone example) to get messages from other cells.
Insulin levels can return to normal with exercise and low glycemic food. However, the caramelized sugars (cell receptors) need to be replaced, because they have been destroyed by high sugar and insulin. The only way to get these essential sugars is from eating 7 to 9 servings of fresh, ripe fruits, and vegetables daily. Very few people can get that done. Thus the need for glyconutrient supplements for maintaining and recovering health.
So glyconutrients are not just another vitamin supplement. They are a whole new class of recently discovered nutrients that act in cell-to-cell communication and are absolutely necessary for health and healing.
"I hope that this information will help you to make the informed personal choices that determine good health. If you get your health care practitioner to order a fasting blood insulin level, you will have a measurement that can motivate you as you make the right choices and see the results. The following slide show represents the type of information that Dr. Meyers covers in his "How to Get Healthy" Power Point presentation.
