Walt Meyer was born in 1922, in Medford, Wisconsin, in a little house on Third Street. He was the first of two boys born to George F. and Irma Walther Meyer. His father was a Lutheran parochial school teacher and his mother was a country school teacher. When discussing his future, they felt that he should become a minister or a doctor, which they considered the two most honorable professions - in that order.
He went to Medford public schools, took his premedical education at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and went to medical school at the University of Chicago. He came back to Madison, Wisconsin for a rotating internship. It was there that he met his wife, Dolores, who came to the student infirmary one night when he was on that service. They have four adult children: Kristin, Walther, George, and Ann. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving Day, 1998.
Changing his plans for an internal medicine residency, Dr. Meyer came back to his hometown, at his father's urging, to practice at the Medford Clinic because one of the doctors had recently died. His father had been the business manager for the group of three. Dr. Meyer still recalls the phone call. "Come up for a year until we can find another Dr." That was in 1947.
Coming home to practice turned out to be good for both him and Medford. He has been active in community affairs, serving on various community committees, service organizations, and school board. He has been active in his church, the Wisconsin State Medical Society, the Medford Clinic, and Memorial Hospital. He has delivered over 6700 babies during his 50 years of practice. He retired from clinic practice about 4 years ago, but still enjoys caring for nursing home patients as a CMD (certified medical director). He is also Medical Director for Courage to Change, which is an AODA drug and alcohol-counseling center.
Semi-retirement has been an exciting time for him as he pursues new knowledge about the relation of nutrition to health maintenance, and longevity.
